As a certified ACSM Health/Fitness Instructor and an IDEA Master Trainer, here is the biggest piece of advice I can give concerning choosing a diet program: Take the time to choose wisely and choose one that fits your needs and lifestyle first and foremost! You want to set yourself up to succeed not waste money and feel like a failure!
The true secret is in finding something that works with your individual personality and lifestyle. So if you are on-the-go and don't have time to shop for foods and prepare meals then Weight Watchers isn't a program I would recommend for you. Instead I might recommend you look into Diet To Go or NutriSystem. Both offer prepared meals so you don't have to shop or meal plan.
Now, let's get into the nitty gritty and discuss the pro's and con's of each diet program and which one's you might want to consider based on your personality type and lifestyle.
If you are a busy mom or professional and don't want to deal with calorie counting, shopping and or meal prep and if you have a little extra money to spend on a meal program then I would recommend you look at Diet To Go and NutriSystem. Choosing which program to go with will really depend on which foods you think you will enjoy more from each company. I recommend researching both sites and looking at some of their food offerings to see what most appeals to you. From what I hear from my clients, Diet To Go has some fresher tasting options that taste less like pre-packaged foods - but again, you will have to research for yourself. Both have good online communities and online support as well as weight tracking programs and tools.
If you are not as busy and have the time to shop and cook your meals then I would recommend Weight Watchers or eDiets. Since neither requires pre-packaged foods it is initially a cheaper option. However, I am not going to say that overall this is less costly because shopping for healthy foods like fresh fruit and veggies can really add up and you can end up with a grocery bill that is often times a lot higher then if you had gone for the pre-packed food programs. Although if you are cooking for a family this is probably your better route to go and will be of cost savings to you. Weight Watchers now offers two plans to choose from: The Flex plan that involves point counting (essentially like counting calories) and the Core plan that promotes healthy well balanced eating with energy dense foods. Choose your plan based on your personality type - if you hate counting calories, go with the Core plan.
If you want to actually choose out your own plan and have a say in the matter then eDiets is the way to go! They are the #1 online resource for diets and have many diet plans to choose from - check out my article review on eDiets for a small sample list or visit their website at ww.eDiets.com for a full list. They also have an endless amount of web resources like articles from registered dieticians and doctors. In my opinion there is no other online diet site like them out there - they are the number one resource for this information! eDiets is also a great one to choose if you are not new to dieting and have somewhat of an idea of what plan you would like to do. You can choose your plan out and customize it to your own needs - tailor fitted specifically to you! Now that's a great option!
Both Weight Watchers and eDiets focus on the entire lifestyle more so than the meal program options (NutriSystem and Diet To Go). So if you are really looking to make a complete lifestyle change both Weight Watchers and eDiets can help you focus on this. However, I have to say that eDiets probably offers the complete package in the sense that they are the number one most trafficked site for health and fitness information and you can find an abundant amount of resources, tools and information on their site to start up a fitness program.
But Beware: Really ask yourself - do you have the time to make a complete lifestyle change? Hopefully the answer is yes, but if you are like most of us - Very Busy - then get real with yourself and at least start off with a prepackaged foods system like NutriSystem or Diet To Go. You can always wean off later on down the road (which is intended) and then switch over to an eDiets program for example where you can then focus on making healthy food choices in the grocery store and adding exercise into your life. In the end it is taking small baby steps and consistency that will lead to success, permanent change and positive life lasting results! Good Luck to you! And just contact me if you have any questions!
